About
Born in the UK and Oxford graduate with a perfect knowledge of Italian and Italy, my skill set ranges from editorial skills to data management, including copy writing and editing in both Italian and English, as well as team management for a range of purposes.
My job
I have been working in the dictionaries division of the Italian publisher Zanichelli since 2002. Zanichelli is the largest educational publisher in Italy and the undisputed market leader in reference. From 2018 I have been in charge of digital reference publishing.
The work of a lexicographer is multi-faceted by its very nature. While a lexicographer has to know about everything, the same applies to the publising process itself. As a result I have a detailed knowledge of all aspects of the publishing industry, from the planning stage to production and marketing. While there is a significant technical aspect to my work, it is also essentially humanities-oriented, meaning the ability to pay attention to detail in a multi-lingual sphere.
Contemporary lexicography requires a wide range of IT skills, and dictionary data is an important factor in many applications, from games to AI chatbots. I personally manage many large structured databases in XML, in numerous languages, and am in charge of the planning and development of digital products for the consumer market. I have personally developed multilingual corpora and other language tools for internal company use.
My educational journey took me from a suburban school in Bristol to lunch with Ernst Gombrich, and ended with a doctorate at Oxford. Here you will find everything you need to know about my "first life" as an academic and researcher, from the West Country to the libraries of Oxford and London, before arriving in Bologna.
This small chapter exists to give you a taste of the creative side to my life, symptom of an innate curiosity.
